4th Intentional Ethics Symposium: The autumn of life: ethical issues of ageing  (23 March - 26 March 2011)

The themes for this colloquium on the ethical challenges raised by ageing flow from those of the preceding intentional ethical symposia and cover one of the burning social questions of our day.


In France today, a man of 65 can expect to live another 18 years and a woman  another 22 (according to the French national demographic institute). Old age is becoming a true ‘age of life’. Five-generation families are no longer exeptions. We can find two generations in retirement. Solidarity between generations is being reconfigured.


This radically new situation is making it necessary to make choices at the level both of society and of communities, and requires reflection on its signifiers, its issues and its implications. We set out to seek convergence in our views, in a fully multi-disciplinary way, to launch a debate with each other on a range of questions that face us all...
