1st International Ethics Symposium
1st International Ethics Symposium: The rites of dying (30 March – 1 April 2006)
The opportunities opened up by biotechnology, or by socio-political, cultural and religious shifts have transformed societies and institutions, brought profound changes in medical practice, and in particular fundamentally altered the process of dying and the rites around it. This colloquium did not satisfy itself with describing death from a contemporary point of view nor with enumerating rites before, during and after death. It rather set out to establish the links between ritual customs around death and the ethical issues in contemporary medicine and the changes now under way.
