3rd International Ethics Symposium

3rd International Ethics Symposium: When death occurs at the dawn of life (25 March - 28 March 2009)

These themes follow on from those debated at the First International Ethics Symposium in Strasbourg on the rties around the process of dyings. Then we debated the question of dying through medical, religious, social and other rites. We left to one side pre- and postnatal death. These are the issues by spontaneous or deliberate death before or after birth addressed by the third international ethics symposium in collaboration with the University of Lausanne.

How do we handle severe foetal disease? Can we substitute late term medical termination by proposing infanticide (‘termination of life for the neonate’)? Is it ethically equivalent to terminate life or to do nothing to prevent death? Deeply challenging questions that we cannot dodge because they go to the core of what it means to be human.
